We knew we were getting a little
off the tourist track when the bus to Mae Sot didn't have any other foreigners
on it. When we arrived in Mae Sot we discovered that while we weren't
the only ones, when we went to the market the goods were aimed at normal
Thais, and not just tourists. We had come to Mae Sot to participate on
a Jungle Trek that found over the Net. The place was out of the way and
the guide seemed friendly, if a little quiet.
We had called to confirm our trek from Bangkok and at that time only
the two of us were signed up for the trek. However, the same day we arrived
three Belgians arrived and decided to join our trek. We ended up having
a great time with them.
Also in our group was our guide, and 4, or 5 other porters. On the first
day we first rode in the back of a covered pickup 4 hours to the start
of the trek. From there things got under way. Our first stretch was going
to be on the Mekong River. We loaded our bags into plastic garbage bags
and tied them the rafts. That day we drifted for about 4 hours on the
