Muskegon is a town that has gone though waves and fads, and continues to do so. It is located right on lake Michigan but doesn't attract the attention of tourists, in spite of its cleaner beaches, as much as towns further south like Grand Haven and Holland. In the past it has tried to appeal more to the manufacturing and shipping industry than the tourist industry with mixed sucess. Around the turn of the century its steel foundries were churning it out and its sawmills were busy processing Michigan lumber for the Chicago area. That was a long time ago though and Muskegon was hard hit when manufacturing became something that was done overseas. Since then Muskegon has needed a niche to fill and by all accounts it hasn't quite struck the jackpot yet. Hopefully it won't resort to a casino to make that analogy all to close to home.
